After School CLIC Classes and Clubs
Community Activism-Whale Class
One of the goals of CLIC is to have community members come in to the school to share their passions. In the whale classes, we explored the oceans and lives of whales in this fun hands on science class taught by Whale Naturalist, Cynde McInnis. This was a very unique 5 week class that is open to all students wanting to learn more about these fascinating creatures. We talked about human impact on the whale’s habitat and food chains—specifically marine debris and entanglements. Students spent the first class inside of Cynde’s giant whale! The next weeks we looked at plankton and the ocean food web, marine debris (how much trash is in the ocean), entanglements, and figuring out ways we can help lessen the issue globally and locally. This program was made possible by the Mass Cultural Council grant that Cynde and I co-wrote.
Proctor Planet Protectors or PPP Club
Proctor's award-winning student club, the Proctor Planet Protectors, accomplish many earth friendly goals alongside the Topsfield Green Committee initiatives. Think globally and act locally is definitely our goal. We have a school garden and donate produce to the Topsfield Food Pantry, run assembly programs, create themed art installations, pilot classroom programs for composting and saving energy, learn about things like 'carbon footprint" and the "materials cycle", learn what kids in other parts of the world are doing for the planet, and make "eco-products" to sell or give-away.
The one big thing we do is put on a special "earth day" event for the whole Topsfield community in the spring! This club is about making real improvements in the real world - Kids have a strong voice, and they get to use it here!
Fun Thursdays
Students came after school and especially love Fun Thursdays. This is a class where CLIC High school students mentor and run special days or holiday projects. It's a relaxing afternoon and the children love coming in and crafting or building things that they wouldn't ordinarily do during the school day. We learn about different cultures through hands on projects or build things from wood or paint on canvas. It is always a special and unique day for all.
