The CLIC Morning clubs are beginning this week starting on September 21. All clubs run from 8:00-8:40 am in the CLIC room.
Monday-STEAM Club
Tuesday-STEAM Club
Wednesday-Chess Club (drop in club, no permission form needed)
Thursday- Art Club
Friday-Art Club
If your child is interested in coming to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Club or Art Club, you must fill out and send in a permission form found at the Before School Program link on this website or your child can pick up a permission form at the CLIC pillar outside the office or outside the CLIC room. Your child is not obligated to stay in the club, and he/she can join anytime throughout the year. STEAM and Art Club are offered twice a week, but your child will pick one to attend. The clubs will run the whole semester. Depending on the club's success, we may continue into the next semester or completely change the club.
STEAM Club will be all about STEAM (Science, Technology,Engineering, Art, and Math). The club will be hands on project based learning. The great thing about STEAM is it is a fusion of all of the STEAM disciplines. Children do not realize how much creative planning and brainstorming (art) and measuring (math) goes into scientific and engineering problem solving. This club will have something for everyone. My hope is to have parents come in and share their STEAM careers or hobbies.
The first project we will be doing in STEAM Club is all about Biomimicry. We will be learning how scientists, designers, and engineers borrow ideas from nature in coming up with innovative solutions. We will be looking at specific examples of biomimicry, research on our own, and then use that information to create a new technology, product, or art form. I am looking forward to all of the creative ideas the kids are going to come up with. Biomimicry is so exciting right now in the arts and sciences utilizing nanotechnology and new materials.
Art Club this month will focus on drawing. I find that children at Proctor really want to know how to draw realistically. We will first focus on how to correctly draw and shade a human portrait. This will be done in a very mechanical way so everyone is welcome to come learn. Once we get the club started, I will let the children have input in what we will create next.
Chess Club will remain a drop in club on Wednesday mornings. Your child does not need a permission form to attend. Please bring or donate a chess board if you have one since it can get pretty busy in chess club. Come to play, learn, or teach chess! This is a student run club and all are invited to attend.
Please support CLIC!
Thank you for your donations this month. We have raised $2,300 so far! CLIC is jointly funded through private and public funding. Plainly speaking, my salary is paid by the school district but everything I buy for CLIC comes from money I raise. This can be a little daunting since I am constantly buying materials for before and after school CLIC as well as everything for your child's class when they come to CLIC during the school day. I never say no to a project and I never want that to change. As CLIC grows every year, I am faced with fundraising for larger amounts of money for all of the materials ($15,000 last year). Please consider donating to CLIC so that I can keep all CLIC programs going strong and open to all children free of charge!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or at the Contact Me Button on the CLIC website ! Thanks, Jen LaRussa
